Today, but not today

In case you missed it, Christopher Nolan (think Dark Knight series, Inception, Dunkirk, etc.) just dropped the teaser for his biopic coming out in 2023, Oppenheimer.

J. Robert Oppenheimer was a physicist out at Cal Berkeley, and also carries the nickname “father of the atomic bomb” for the role he played in the Manhattan Project. His reaction after seeing the successful detonation at the Trinity Test was allegedly, “Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds”, quoting from the Bhagavad Gita. Less than a month later on August 6, 1945, the United State dropped the bomb on Hiroshima.

So what happened today exactly?

On August 2, 1938, Albert Einstein signed a letter that was authored by physicist Leo Szilard and addressed to President Franklin Roosevelt. It described recent advancements/discoveries in the nuclear realm. In that letter, he recommended that the President stay connected to the physicists doing this research in America and to centralize or formalize the work by putting the U.S. Government’s resources behind it.

This letter eventually led to the Manhattan Project, Oppenheimer, Trinity, Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Knowing what they know now, would they do anything different?
